The Role Of Leadership In Business Excellence

On 26 February I delivered my keynote speech at the 10th Business Excellence Forum in Tehran/Iran. My presentation was titled: “The role of leadership in business excellence”. (http://tinyurl.com/4ugthos)

My main message for the more than 500 CEO’s and senior leaders that were attending the forum, was that the key to building a successful organisation for “tomorrow”, is to focus on people “today” (i.e. focus on developing your Human Capital).

Being successful tomorrow and beating the competition means to be faster than others in developing leadership on all levels in your organization and in everything you do.

More specifically, you as a leader in your organisation should focus on two key activities:

1) Develop right brain capacity in your organisation.

–> This means you should focus on developing people’s capacity for creative thinking, innovation, building strategic alliances and relationships (to name a few). A proven concept and model to develop right brain capacity is through Herrmann’s Whole Brain Model and the HBDI. (www.herrmann.com.au).

2) ‘Make Talent’ instead of ‘Buy Talent’.

–> Most companies around the world are engaged in the ‘war for talent’, they are looking constantly outside their organisation to find ‘new talent’ i.e. ‘buy talent’. My argument is that you should not focus on ‘buying talent’ but instead focus on ‘making talent’ i.e. identify the natural talents in people (through Herrmann’s HBDI survey) to find the potential in your organisation. Don’t look for only what you need, identify ALL the talent to your disposal, then nurture and develop these talents.
